5 Sept 96, addendum

I had just one class today, and I missed it! I thought it was at 1:30--
it's at 9:30. Doh!

5 Sept 96

First day of classes, but only one class today. No classes on Friday
(yippee!). I just saw "Mary Pat" in a news story this morning; I get
pissed off when people have my name. That reminds me, according to NYU
I'm Mary Pat Campbell (for those who don't realize: my legal name is Mary
Patricia Campbell). So when I get my doctorate, it will be Mary Pat
Campbell, PhD. Cool.

I saw _Cats_ last night in orchestra seats that I paid $20 for (it's
usually $70). I just don't understand why this show has played so long,
while others have just fizzled. There's only one good song in the show
(Memory), there's a scanty semblance of a plot, and this was all based on
a book of nonsense poetry by T.S. Eliot (though some might claim his
other stuff was nonsense poetry and "Old Possum's Book of Practical Cats"
was his masterpiece). I mean, I bet T.S. Eliot would've been surprised
that this was his big seller; it's obvious from all the trouble that he
went through to compile obscure footnotes for "The Wasteland" that he
thought that would be his hit. My favorite is "The Love Song of J.
Alfred Prufrock" -- "Let us go then, you and I, when the evening is
spread out against the sky like a man etherized upon a table..."

I saw my first strike & my first arrest in the area. The strike was NYU
workers wanting a raise; they has signs, chants, and a bullhorn: they
were prepared. The arrest was some pissed-off guy on the street. I
think it was a disturbance of the peace kind of call. He was the 5th
person they were going to pack in the police van. A police van is such a
good idea: you get your quota in about an hour, and you can send them off.

Before I saw Cats, I wandered down 51st St. from Broadway to 6th Ave. to
see Radio City Music Hall. They were having the MTV video music awards
there last night. There was a band playing on top of the marquee. =ho hum=

I saw Times Square. Boy, it looks dinky in real life.

I saw MST3K: The Movie for free, again, at the student center. The sound
got screwed up, but I didn't care. That lady in the movie really only
knew one look, and I always wondered what that look was supposed to mean:
"I cost more than that", "Something in here smells real bad", "This is
all I learned at acting school". And my trials with NYNEX are over. I
have to pay for my phone calls now. poopie.
